Student feedbacks for Károly Zsolnai Vienna University of Technology, Austria - Rendering course, 2013 http://cg.tuwien.ac.at/courses/Rendering/VU.SS2013.html //////////////////////////////////// Dear Károly, thx 4 being so AWESOME! Your Rendering lecture is extremely motivating, interesting and UNDERSTANDABLE. Plz stay at TU Vienna. k? thx! bye. -- You wanted us to see the world differently - you have achieved it. The smallpaint code walkthrough was a good lecture as after learning the theory it is good to see how easy it is. Still I am sad, so many features are missing in most rendering techniques, and doing "path tracing/ray tracing" sounds now so boring after you showed us the cool stuff. -- Thank you for your lecture, it was obvious that you really made an effort. It was really impressive how well you explained some difficult topics - I can tell because I had to research a lot of these topics before on my own and it was hard to figure things out conclusively. You did a great job, it was a lot of fun and if possible, I would love to continue to work on research on some of the awesome rendering topics. =) -- Great course! -> Presentation style was awesome! (Enthusiastic and with passion for the topic!) -> Explanations were comprehensible (even with the math stuff!) -> Content was good/informative! Wish more courses in the university would be like that, keep up the awesome work! -- The lecture was very interesting and also your style of presenting was really nice. The assignments were simple and understandable (most of the time) and fun to play around with. Good job :) -- It was one of the best courses I've ever visited. Incredible fun! Very informative! Keep up the funny slides! Good luck at Disney. -- I like the course very much. I took only one "similar" lecture, "Basics of virtual environment" so I was not sure if I'll be able to catch everything. I didn't, but I did catch most. And I loved the "hands-on" projects with algorithms. Thanks! -- I particularly liked the trouble you took to provide us with additional material. Also, I think it is a very good idea to make us answer questions and think along (although I didn't think there was much danger of falling asleep). If there is one thing to improve it, it could be even more/easier overview over the organizational stuff. -- Thank you! Great lecture. Very funny. Easy explanation of complicated things. Good assignments (they invite you to be creative). Please hold more lectures in the future! Hopefully we meet on the oral exam. -- The lecture was great and I wouldn't change any part of your style (humor). -- Positive side: - slides were awesome: very well done, many examples, not too complicated + funny! - complicated things explained simply: you do not cover details unless necessary and this is good! - Fine presentation, good participation with the audience => would never fall asleep in one of your lectures, don't worry! ;-) Negative side: - Sometimes a bit too slow on easy parts, e.g. ray intersection with spheres, but very rarely ;-) (and it's better to insist too much than having people who don't understand!) General: very good learning experience! Very encouraging =) Hope you'll come back soon =) -- Pros + very modern, recent algorithms presented + funny presentation + nice slides (and images) + good tips on literature + clearly you also know a lot about the field Cons - not your fault (probably) but: a bit more details would be nice. I guess there's too little time for that, but still. Key Message: Don't change too much in the future, it was a nice course. //////////////////////////////////// Suggestions and responses: S: more comments in smallpaint. R: sure, the new version with a lot more comments is now uploaded. S: some of you say that at some places the lecture materials are too much, others wish for even more. Some of you found that the assignments were easy, others deemed them a bit difficult. R: In a way, I agree with both. My idea was that the lecture materials and the assignments should represent a level that is understandable and doable for everyone on the course. For the very best and the ones who wish to know more, there are the pro versions for every assignment problem which are quite a bit more challenging, and also a large amount of literature is handed out for them to make sure that everyone is entertained. :) S: about uploading the submissions to tuwel instead of transferring by e-mail R: That's a good point, I will look into it! Hopefully it also offers a way to post personalized response to the students - if so, tuwel sounds like a good candidate for this! S: some of you have asked for a long time interval for the last assignment R: done! :)
