Following nine successful EUROGRAPHICS workshops on Visualization in Scientific Computing (Clamart '90, Delft '91, Viareggio '92, Abingdon '93, Rostock '94, Chia '95, Prague '96, Boulogne sur Mer '97, and Blaubeuren '98) the tenth event of this series was held in Vienna, Austria. To celebrate this anniversary, for 1999 this event was the first
Joint EUROGRAPHICS - IEEE TCVG Symposium on Visualization,
VisSym '99 for short. The symposium was a public event; no invitations or accepted papers were needed to attend. We appreciated strong participation from both sides of the Atlantic. Research papers as well as case studies (new!) formed the scientific content of this event and were published in a book by Springer-Verlag called ``Data Visualization '99''. Research papers came from most areas of visualization and presented original scientific ideas or significant improvements to existing techniques. Case studies reported on the successful application of visualization methods to some special problem or field. Topics of the symposium were:

The symposium was organized as a single-track assembly of presentations of research papers and case studies. Enough time for discussion was scheduled after the talks and inbetween the sessions. An invited talk was also included. The scientific program covered three days in May, 1999. For details see the section below (``Important Dates'').

VisSym '99 was held in Vienna, Austria. It was organized by the visualization group at the Institute of Computer Graphics, Vienna University of Technology, and the Austrian Academy of Science. The talks were given in a technically well-equiped conference room right in the main building of the Academy. A social event featuring the beautiful city of Vienna was included within the symposium program. For more information about the venue of VisSym '99, please refer to http://www.cg.tuwien.ac.at/conferences/VisSym99/venue.html.
If you have any questions regarding the symposium, just ask (mailto:vissym99@cg.tuwien.ac.at).
Authors were requested to prepare their contribution as a full paper (research paper: up to ten pages; case study: up to six pages), following the publishing guidelines by Springer. Accepted papers were published in a book by Springer-Verlag and, therefore, were required to be type-set using the LaTeX files by Springer. Style files and instructions for authors are available via http://www.cg.tuwien.ac.at/conferences/VisSym99/springer.html.
To finally submit the camera-ready copy of a paper, it had to be uploaded as a `gzip'ed Postscript version (including no other fonts than `Times', `Helvetica', `Courier', and `Symbol') of the full paper using FTP to ftp://ftp.cg.tuwien.ac.at/pub/VisSym99/upload/. The file should have included everything, i.e., text and images. Note, that there was a limit of one (additional) page of color plates per paper, which were placed at the end of the book. After successfully uploading your paper, an eMail (mailto:vissym99@cg.tuwien.ac.at) had to be sent, clearly indicating the type of the paper (research paper or case study), list of authors, title, and abstract. Note, that we could not accept any Postscript file which could not be viewed/printed using ghostview - still there are too many (incompatible) versions of Postscript around.
If it was not possible to upload a paper as `ghostview'-compatible Postscript, alternatively two copies of the full paper including figures and images as well as two copies of your video (if you have one) could have been sent by regular mail to
