IMPORTANT:

(1) The initial meeting (Vorbesprechung) for SS 2023 will be held on Thursday 9th March 2023 at 14:00-15.30 (SEM186) . 

(2) It is obligatory to register on TISS before March 9th, so that you have access to the materials on TUWEL.  

(3) The date of the final presentations for SS 2023 will be the 22nd of June (whole day).

General information

Goal:

The goal of this seminar is to learn how to write and present a state-of-the-art report and to learn how to write a review on another report. A member of the teaching staff will guide and help students in acquiring the scientific material and writing the report. The students are also expected to present their work in front of the other students. Students are expected to work in groups of two, but if someone has strong preferences to work on their own, this is also possible. 

Tasks for the students:

Teaching staff will evaluate and grade students based on the following output:

• An initial list of literature that a student intends to review. This document will be regarded as an official seminar registration of the student.
• Attendance of the lectures "Forschung und wie sie funktioniert" by Professor Eduard Gröller, the lecture "Wie halte ich einen Vortrag" by Professor Hannes Kaufmann, and the lecture "Wie schreibt man eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit" by Professor Michael Wimmer. You can ask for a waiver in case you have already attended one of these talks (e.g., in other seminars).
• A written state of the art report in the form of a scientific paper. We strongly encourage that the reports are composed in LaTeX. The report must have a minimum of 16 pages, if students are working in groups of two (if students are working alone, the minimum is 8 pages). The report has to be written in English. See

  A Survey on Transit Map Layout –from Design, Machine, and Human Perspectives by Wu et al.
  as examples.
• A written review of one of the surveys of another student/team.
• A presentation in English followed by a discussion. The duration of the presentation will be announced after the literature submission deadline. The slides are to be submitted prior to the talk on TUWEL.
• Active discussion participation is expected after the presentation of other students. This will provide points for your final grade. 

Important Dates:

• 09.03.2023: Initial meeting at 14:00 - 15:30 (SEM186), where the topics will be presented.
• 09.03.2023: Confirm your enrolment on TUWEL (during the initial meeting).
• 09.03.2023-16.03.2023: Select a topic/working group on TUWEL.
• 17.03.2023: Project assignments are announced.
• 17.03.2023-24.03.2023: Submit the list of literature on TUWEL.
• Attend the following lectures:
  • 23.03.2023 (13:00-15:00): "Science and how it works", by Professor Gröller at (SEM186).
  • 21.04.2023 (12:00-14:00): "How to write a scientific publication" by Professor Wimmer (SEM186). 
  • 27.04.2023 (13:00-14.00): "How to do a presentation", by Professor Kaufmann. This lecture is provided as a video recording (on TUWEL): the students can watch the video at a time of their convenience, but they can ask questions on the 27th of April on zoom.
• 23.04.2023: Submit the intermediate report (half of the content).
• 24.04.2023: Receive a review form and a report from another student. (Practical Tips and Tricks for Paper Writing is helpful for identifying the quality of the report.)
• 07.05.2023: Submit the completed review on TUWEL.
• 08.05.2023: Receive two reviews (one from your supervisor and one from another student). Use the information provided in the reviews to update your report accordingly.
• 22.06.2023: Presentations will be held approx. between 09:00-17:00 (schedule will be concretized later). Attendance is mandatory and active participation grants you points. The presentations will be held at SEM186.
• 23.06.2023: Submit your final report on TUWEL.
• 30.06.2023: Get your final grade. 

The deadlines are strict and no exceptions will be made. 

Grading Criteria:

• The quality of the written report is worth 45% of the grade
• The quality of the talk is worth 30% of the grade
• The quality of the review is worth 15% of the grade
• Active discussion participation is worth 5% of the grade
• Attendance during the lectures is worth 5% of the grade

Plagiarism:

Students are expected to abide by professional scientific ethics and make sure that the work is not plagiarizing other works in any sense. For further information about referencing, see this guide and our guidelines. Plagiarism is a serious offence and is not tollerated!
